Introduction

Liberty High School’s Secondary School Courses Policy, in line with Ontario’s Education Act and the Ministry of Education’s guidelines, provides a comprehensive framework for course offerings, prerequisites, and alternative credit acquisition methods. This policy ensures that students have access to a broad range of courses and flexible learning options, enabling them to fulfill their academic goals and graduation requirements.

II. Course Offerings and Prerequisites

Range of Courses: Liberty High School offers a wide array of courses across various disciplines, including mandatory subjects like English, Mathematics, and Science, as well as elective courses in the Arts, Technology, Social Sciences, and more.

Prerequisite Requirements: Each course’s prerequisites are clearly outlined in the school’s course calendar. These prerequisites are designed to ensure that students have the necessary background knowledge and skills to succeed in the course.

Course Selection Process: Guidance counselors assist students in selecting courses that align with their academic strengths, interests, and post-secondary aspirations.

III. Changing Course Types

Process for Changing Courses: Students may request to change course types (e.g., from academic to applied, or vice versa) through a formal process involving consultation with teachers and guidance counselors.

Consideration Factors: Decisions regarding course type changes are based on the student’s academic record, learning style, and future educational or career plans.

IV. Alternative Credit Acquisition

E-Learning Courses: E-learning courses are offered to provide students with additional flexibility and to accommodate diverse learning styles. These courses follow the Ontario curriculum and are facilitated by qualified instructors.

Independent Study: Students may earn credits through independent study for subjects not offered at the school. This requires a proposal outlining the learning objectives, resources, and evaluation methods, subject to approval by the school administration.

Credit Recovery and Summer School: Credit recovery options are available for students who have not successfully completed a course. Additionally, summer school courses are offered for credit advancement or recovery.

V. Specialized Programs and Advanced Placement

Specialized High Skills Major (SHSM): SHSM programs allow students to focus on a career path that matches their skills and interests while meeting the requirements of the OSSD.

Advanced Placement (AP) Courses: AP courses provide students with the opportunity to pursue university-level studies while still in high school, potentially earning advanced standing or credit at universities.

VI. Policy Monitoring and Compliance

Regular Reviews: The course offerings and policies are regularly reviewed to ensure alignment with Ontario’s curriculum standards and to respond to the evolving educational landscape.

Compliance with Provincial Standards: All courses and credit acquisition methods comply with the policies and guidelines set forth by the Ontario Ministry of Education.

VII. Roles and Responsibilities

School Administration: Ensures that the course offerings meet provincial standards and that the policies for course selection and credit acquisition are implemented effectively.

Guidance Counselors: Provide support and advice to students and parents regarding course selection, prerequisites, and alternative credit options.

Teachers: Deliver course content in line with the Ontario curriculum and provide guidance to students on course selection and academic progression.
